FEATURED PROJECT

Only the Narrow Road Leads to this Final Resting Place.

During the past construction season, Musselman & Hall Contractors teamed up with Banner Construction & Environmental Services for a project at Fort Leavenworth National Cemetery. The project consisted of a 2” mill and overlay, combined with some curb replacement. Simple enough, but certainly not without its challenges.

The project was classified as a Small Business Set-Aside which meant the general contractor had to be a Service Disabled Veteran Owned Business to be awarded the project and must complete 15% of the contracted amount in house. It was also being funded from the American Recovery & Reinvestment Act of 2009. There were a total of 5 bidders on the project. Banner Construction & Environmental Services was awarded the job.

John Ames, project manager for Banner Construction & Environmental Services and Sean Marra, project manager/estimator of Musselman & Hall Contractors, worked closely on the 60-calendar day project. The 1,150 ton overlay and 2,150 feet of curb replacement was time-consuming due too the narrow roadways with an average width of 18’. Crews would have to wait for one truck to pull completely off the roadway they were working on before backing the next one in. The average length of the roads in the project was 650’.

While not difficult to complete the work in the 60-calendar days allowed, each day of the project was a team effort of scheduling and close communication between the owner of the construction companies involved and the cemetery. There are no more burials for service persons at the facility it is only used for funeral services and cremations of service personnel spouses.

The contract also required that at least 50% of the construction material debris hauled off the project be recycled. Banner Construction & Environmental Services & Musselman & Hall Contractors exceeded that goal by recycling 100% of the curb and 85% of the milled asphalt.

The Fort Leavenworth National Cemetery job was the first venture between Banner and M&H and proved successful on all fronts. Both companies look forward to working together again should the right project present a future opportunity.
